Fed Up with Condom Catheter Issue Sept 10, 2019 15:49:38 GMT -8

I in my early 40’s and have been a C5 quad for just over two years. I was looking for other posts about this topic since it is not the easiest thing to talk about or describe, but I could not, so here goes…
I have been using condom catheters ever since I switched from using a Foley in rehab. I have had reasonably good luck with condom caths for about the first year or so. Of course, they occasionally decide to leak, but if I protected myself ahead of time against that possibility, they worked pretty well. I have always used the Coloplast Freedom Clear Advantage brand of silicone catheters. I was using a the 35mm size for all but the last couple of months until I moved to the 31mm size. (That is a topic for another posting.) Instead of a leg bag, I usually use a large night time drainage bag that hangs discretely under my seat behind my leg rests so I don't have to worry about how much I drink. I usually drink a lot of fluids during the day (which may contribute to the issue below).
For about the past six months or so (using both sizes of catheters), I have been having problems with leakage and as well what happens to my equipment after a full day of being inside one. I am not exactly sure how to explain this, so hopefully there will be guys out there who understand that I am trying to describe. Both the catheter and my equipment look totally normal in the morning after my PCA puts it on. In the evening, when it’s time to get undressed and go through my evening routine, things are quite different down there.
Typically, only about half of the adhesive (the part closest to my body) is still holding to my skin at the end of the day and my equipment has retreated back inside its own skin like it appears to be trying to retract up into my body. I have no idea what is causing this or how to avoid it. I have noticed a direct correlation between this happening and the odds of getting to the end of the day and noticing that everything down there has been in a pee marinade for god knows how long. The good thing is that all of my skin down there is still healthy, but it probably won’t continue to be over the long term.
Does anyone know what is causing this? Is it normal? Can it be avoided? Is it caused by back pressure from the tubing/bag? Is it because I am just getting old? (I hope not!). Would switching brands or perhaps moving to an indwelling catheter alternative be a better solution? Thank you in advance for your help!
