This is a great and useful development that has been the initiative of Nike after being contacted by Matthew Walzer, a 16-year-old who lives with cerebral palsy.
He wanted to find footwear that he could put on himself and not worry about needing someone to help him every day putting them on.
“My dream is to go to the college of my choice without having to worry about someone coming to tie my shoes every day,” he wrote, according to Nike. “As a teenager who is striving to become totally self-sufficient, I find this extremely frustrating and, at times, embarrassing.”
The letter made it into the right hands. When Tobie Hatfield, a Nike shoe designer, read Matthew’s request, he immediately got to work developing a prototype for a shoe Matthew and other people with disabilities could wear comfortably.
Instead of laces, the Zoom Soldier 8 features Flyease technology, a type of zipper that goes around the heel of the shoe. This makes it easier for people with limited hand function to easily pull the shoes on and off with one hand.
The new design includes the same ankle support as Lebron James’s footwear (James is Matthew’s favorite basketball player).

Very supportive, and deep toe box, so no pressure points. Something built in for lateral stability, which really helped me!
They look like a great option for winter here wavewolf! Support is crucial for us walkers..
Actually, they are not warm enough for me in winter. I have great circulation, and wear support hose and medium weight fleece socks in winter, but they do not keep my feet warm and that makes my legs spazz. So I wear a lightweight over-shoe, and that does the trick! Also keeps my shoes clean, and over-shoes are very quick and easy to remove--you just have to find a safe place to put them when you're out.
Here is an excellent plain black shoe from NB if you want support for walking, roomy toe box but fitted heel, and good value at their outlet: www.joesnewbalanceoutlet.com/detail.asp?style=WK706BL It is the only athletic style shoe made by NB without the "N" on it, because it is made for the US Postal Service carriers, and those guys really walk a lot! Check out other styles by size and last.
Over-shoes, none better than: www.campmor.com/Product___44910 Not cheap, but my last pair endured for 20 years wearing every day in winter. Would still be wearing, but my dog chewed one up. Very lightweight, totally waterproof (important--you do live in England!). Does not hinder walking at all, and you can wear an ice grip over it for icy conditions like your driveway--perfect solutions!
