Well i have moaned and complained soooo much about rectal examinations and at every opportunity that i thought i may as well post about the subject!
Anyone reading this with Cauda Equina Syndrome will know just what i mean! Well you guys too who have a spinal cord injury not called Cauda Equina will also know but i think its fair to say...if we did a poll..we will have had more!
It just so happens that the good old finger in the butt situation is ,medically appropriate as it is criteria because degree of rectal tone is part of the assessment....
Hmmmm just another joy i guess! Well everywhere else is prodded, pin pricked and poked so why not there too!
But seriously once i see the rubber glove and the lube...if i could run..i would!
I remember the day of my emergency surgery as specialist had come to 'examin' me...and his words were..''would you like the good or the bad news first' I took the good first lol '' You wont know what it means yet but the good news is that you have some slight rectal tone and the bad news is that you will be having emergency surgery today'' What?! The correct term in regards to diagnosis and this examination is ''There may be a loss of anal sphincter tone (sphincteric disorder) noted on rectal examination. It figures that the nerves to this area are significantly damaged which are part of the bundle located at the Cauda Equina....My butt is still numb...(mostly) but nevertheless..i still hate these examinations and so much so that when i was in rehab i put a ban on them being carried out on me after i had the initial one carried out to decide on my bowel programmme. Sorry guys..this wasnt the most loveliest of my posts!
